Most homes need far less heat than they expect. Oversize the stove and you will run it slowly, tar the flue and blacken the glass.
The most common mistake we are asked to put right is an oversized stove. A stove that is too powerful gets damped down to stop the room becoming unbearable, and a damped down stove burns dirty: tar in the flue, soot on the glass and a fraction of the efficiency you paid for.
The rough calculation
As a starting point, measure the room in metres, multiply length by width by height, then divide by 14. That gives an approximate kilowatt requirement for a reasonably insulated modern room.
A 5m by 4m room with a 2.4m ceiling gives 48 cubic metres, or roughly 3.4kW. Divide by 10 instead of 14 for a draughty period property with single glazing and solid walls.
Why most homes land at 4 to 5kW
Very few Berkshire living rooms need more than 5kW. There is also a regulatory advantage: appliances rated at 5kW or below usually do not require a dedicated permanent air vent, which keeps the installation simpler and the room free of draughts.
