A stove is a building notifiable installation. The certificate is not paperwork for its own sake, it is what your insurer and your buyer's solicitor will ask to see.
Fitting a solid fuel appliance is notifiable work under Part J of the Building Regulations. That means the installation must either be signed off by your local authority building control department, or self-certified by a registered competent person.
Windsor & Eton Stoves is a HETAS registered business, registration 3869. We self-certify every installation and notify your local authority on your behalf.
What the certificate proves
A HETAS Certificate of Compliance records that the installation meets the regulations. It confirms:
- The appliance is suitable and correctly sized for the space
- The flue or liner is the right diameter, grade and length
- The hearth, clearances to combustibles and ventilation all comply
- A carbon monoxide alarm has been fitted and tested
- A data plate has been installed recording the system for future engineers
When you will need it
Two moments in particular. First, if you ever make a fire-related insurance claim, your insurer will want to see that the appliance was competently installed. Second, when you sell, your buyer's solicitor will request the certificate as part of standard enquiries, and its absence can delay or reprice a sale.

It happens often, particularly with stoves fitted by a previous owner. We can inspect the installation, put right anything that falls short and, where the work meets the standard, issue the compliance paperwork for your records.
