Why should I use a HETAS approved installer?

The growth of the renewable energy sector has meant increasing demand for solid fuel, wood and biomass installations. In England & Wales, there are two routes to legally install a domestic solid fuel, wood or biomass burning appliance. A HETAS approved installer will have the skills and the experience to install your stove safely and to a very high standard. HETAS registered installers can self certify that their work complies with the relevant building regulations, and issue the customer with a certificate of compliance. A copy of the certificate is also sent to HETAS who will notify the relevant Local Authority on their behalf. Alternatively, the customer must apply to the Local Authority Building Control department for a Building Notice, and pay the appropriate fee which can cost up to £600 per job.

HETAS is the ONLY competent persons registration scheme specialising in the installation of solid fuel, wood and biomass installations,

Do I really need a HETAS Certificate?

You must ensure that your stove is installed by a recognised competent person who is appropriately qualified in the installation of stoves and that the installation complies with all local, national and European building regulations. For England and Wales see https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/468872/ADJ_LOCKED.pdf

In England and Wales all stove installations are subject local building regulation requirements and are by law notifiable to the local Building Control department. There are two routes to legally install a domestic solid fuel, wood or biomass burning appliance. A HETAS approved installer will have the skills and the experience to install your stove safely and to a very high standard. HETAS registered installers can self-certify that their work complies with the relevant building regulations, and issue the customer with a certificate of compliance. A copy of the certificate is also sent to HETAS who will notify the relevant Local Authority on their behalf. Alternatively, the customer must apply to the Local Authority Building Control department for a Building Notice and pay the appropriate fee. Once the appropriate fee has been paid and the installation is inspected, the Building Control Officer will issue the appropriate compliance certificate.

HETAS is the ONLY competent persons registration scheme specialising in the installation of solid fuel, wood and biomass installations,

it is a requirement of the overwhelming majority of building insurance companies that any installed stove has been fitted in full compliance with all building regulations, i.e. the installation has been inspected, is compliant and has been notified. Without suitable competent installation and approval installations can be dangerous. Should the worst happen with no record of an appropriate certificate at your property then your insurance may be invalidated. Many insurers also require the house holder to inform them of the installation of a new fixed heating appliance and a relevant certificate of compliance produced.

If there is no official record of a compliant installation with HETAS or through your local authority can also cause problems for future house sales.

Failure to notify the Local Authority (the process differs in Scotland), can be an offence resulting in enforcement action being taken against the Householders and/or the installer, this could cost anything up to £5000.

Installation – Adverse weather conditions

From time to time adverse weather conditions can affect our installation timetable. Windsor & Eton Stoves make every effort to ensure your stove is delivered and installed on the specified date, however occasionally adverse weather conditions such as snow or very high winds can make access to roof areas dangerous and can also affect our supply chain. If this happens we will keep you informed and contact you as soon as we can to re-schedule your installation in the next available time. The safety of our staff and customers is of the highest importance.

Certificate of Compliance

Customers using a HETAS Registered Installer will be given a HETAS Certificate of Compliance by the installer on the completion of installation work. This is vital importance in demonstrating that the installation was carried out by a competent installer working for a HETAS registered business and complies with the relevant Building Regulations. The information on the certificate is used to record your installation, and in England & Wales it is used to notify your Local Authority Building Control Department (LABC) of the work that was undertaken. This 'self certification' by competent registered installers takes the place of a Local Authority Building Notice which could cost you a significant amount of money (sometimes up to £600). The HETAS installer is charged a small fee by HETAS for this service, but much less than the charges incurred if you seek a Building Notice via the Local Authority. The information is required to validate household insurance and will be required by Solicitors in any home selling process. Failure to notify the Local Authority (the process differs in Scotland), can be an offence resulting in enforcement action being taken against the Householders and/or the installer, this could cost anything up to £5000.
